Five 2007 Albums You Should Have For the Cover Alone

2007 has seen the light to some amazing new music and some pretty amazing package design and album art to cap it off. So here are a few covers that I aesthetically, highly regard.

1. Memomena – Friend & Foe (Barsuk)

Craig Thompson has taken cd packaging to a whole new level. Thompson’s illustrations and along with his ingenuity has really aided this album. The intricacy in layers and near-chaotic cartoon illustrations is a definitive reflection of Menomena’s style and one that hopefully gains as much recognition as the band themselves.

2. Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna Are You The Destroyer? [US Release] (Polyvinyl/Popfrenzy)

Hissing Fauna

Who says album covers can only open one way? Together with David Barnes’ graphics is near genius.

3. Blonde Redhead – 23 (4AD/Remote Control)

Is there are name for these optical illusions that when two you cover up ANY two legs, the tennis lady still looks perfectly normal. Who knew a four-legged lady could be this much fun. The track listing is on a seperate, small piece of paper that’s meant to enclose the cover is a nuisance to remove and you would most likely just lose it.

4.Band of Horses – Cease to Begin (Sub Pop)

Cease to Begin

Who needs lyrics when you’ve got photo cards?

5. Electrelane – No Shouts, No Calls (Too Pure/Remote Control)

No Shouts No Calls

A simple and coherent design that is a clear reflection of the music.
