Over a year ago, googling for the band Songs was a rather difficult task. Show after show I would see them filling support slots and it always left me optimistic for the Sydney-based quartet. I never realised it would take this long to deliver their first full-length release.

Good things come to those who wait, right? Their self-titled release sees a culmination of the music they’ve been staging over the past year. They introduce those familiar sounds, now refined and tangible. The general tone in their self-titled release is relaxed – a style not only indicative of our lifestyle but also musically as they fuse elements of Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, The Clean and Galaxie 500. This is 12 well-structured tracks, drenched in fuzzy distortion and reverb contrasting the blissful vocal melodies of Max Doyle and Ela Stiles most notably in “Clouds”, “Its Dry”, “Just an Idea” and “Pain”. The grand track, “Just an Idea” basks in constant sunshine – it is impressive and stirs memories of summer. Songs have developed a distinct musical identity complete with a strong following and not once have they fallen flat. They are a band that is constantly exciting and I hope this never changes.
